From Lines and Shapes to City

Buildings are a part of a city 's unique character while its infrastructure networks are like the arteries in our human body that brings life to every part of the city. What makes up a good city depends a lot on the mix of buildings and its infrastructure networks.

“From Lines and Shapes to City” is a 4-day workshop series that brings the children on an adventure as a junior urban planner. The workshops seek to explore the city focusing on transportation networks and geometry forms of buildings that make up our city. Participants will be introduced to the urban environment and the basics of urban planning. As a junior urban planner, they will plan, design and build their imaginary city .

Day 1
After being introduced to the world of urban planning from what is a city to the basic principles of urban design, they will take on the role of a junior urban planner to plan, design and map out their imaginary city on paper.
Mapping and geography skills will be picked up along the way and put to good use as they whip up their own city map!

Day 2
What is a geometric net? It is a 2-dimensional figure that can be folded into a three dimensional model. In a way, it is like the architect’s architectural drawings of elevations and plans put together on a single diagram.
We will be exploring nets in greater detail by first observing the geometric shapes and patterns in our city and then identifying the relationships of the shapes in 2 and 3 dimensions.

Day 3
Through hands-on exploration, the participants will set out to design a landmark out of geometric solids.
Day 2 and Day 3 workshops are intended to connect learning in Math with Architecture through hands-on design and exploration while developing their observation skills to “see” Math around us in our city.

Day 4
“What makes a good city?” With our landmark buildings built up, it is up to the participants to decide where to position them in a given plot of land and connect them together to build an ideal city. We will revisit the concepts of urban planning learnt in Day 1 and develop problem solving skills as we work together as a team to make the city a better place to live, work and play.

Veggies RULES!

Veggies on the plate are definitely not a child’s favourite! This time around, we have decided to take on these seemingly distasteful veggies and turn them around as part of our design inspiration.
In this workshop series, children will discover how they can get design ideas by exploring and observing closely common vegetables, in a variety of ways. They then learn to translate their ideas and inspiration into practical designs and to present their designs in sketches, drawings and models.
The workshops will consist of a series of small projects which together will help to stimulate and guide the students through their design process to create a Veggie Town!

WORKSHOP PROGRAMME
Day 1 introduces sectional and elevational drawings as a type of architecture drawing. Participant will also get to develop their observation skills as they learn to examine the object in close detail and develop their drawing skills at the same time. They will also experiment using watercolour as a medium for their art.

Day 2 will provide hands-on exploration of the real object - "vegetables" as the participants attempt to create an edible art/ architecture and collaborate to create a veggie town.

Day 3 allows participants to look into the details of their veggie buildings designed in Day 2 and create a sectional and elevational drawing of their building.

I'm dreaming of a house...

Sorry for the late posting but do check out all the cool houses designed by our little architects!

We are very proud of them because when they came in for the workshop, they had no idea what is a architectural plan about. When we talked about the concept of scale, everyone was confused!
"It's too complicated! " Girl exclaimed.
But at the end of the workshop, they managed to understand a little better of what an architectural plan is and acquire a sense of scale in relation to their human body. OF course, they all went home proud of their own design!

March into our March holiday workshop ; "Draw me a House!"

“Draw me a house!” and the child whipped out a drawing of his dream house within a mere ten minutes.

In reality, it is a much more elaborate process for the architect before he comes out with a design of a house.

Step into the shoes of the architect and learn about the stages of design development an architect goes through before coming up with a design for a house.
In this 2-day workshop, participants will be guided through the various steps an architect takes in design development, from developing a design brief to design sketch exploration to preparing drawings and making a model of the house. As the children learn to use and create 2d floor plans to represent 3 dimensional spaces, they will inherently develop a sense of scale in their attempt to relate to the built environment using their human body.

At the end of the workshop, each one will get to bring home their dream house floor plan and model as well as a mini experience of being an architect!

Skyscraper workshop update

Our skyscraper workshop ended off on a good note! The children enjoyed themselves and went home with their prideful skyscraper structures and drawings together with some worthy experience! From learning to manage the risks with use of glue guns to problem solving how to make their design structurally stable and acquiring some architectural concepts along the way, they made it and we can tell that they were proud of their own achievements!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Everyone loves the gingerbread house for one good reason! You can eat it as and when you feel like it just like Hansel and Gretel. But how different can it get other than the fact that it is made from sugary sweet candies and cookies?

Let our children amaze us with their creativity in creating their versions of gingerbread houses with a modern twist!
SO, what will the children be making their houses out of?
Sweets, Biscuits and cookies, of course!

The workshop is split into two sessions, one for 5-7 year olds and the other for 8-10 year olds. The younger children will be involved in making their own gingerbread house while the older children will have a take on creating their imaginary city on a collaborative scale using their individually created gingerbread house.

The session is intended to provoke children’s imagination and allow them to explore the world through their senses. By picking a medium of architecture that they will have great delight seeing and playing with, we hope to inspire them to create a tastefully playful architecture. Have Fun!
